Johnny Hoogerland shone in 2009 after undergoing intensive training in order to start his first season as a professional with a high level of fitness. His efforts paid off as he went on to have a successful season, showing his abilities in classics and improving even more in events after the season. Hoogerland competed with some of the best ranked riders in the Tour of Spain claiming 12th place in the final rankings. He went on to compete in the World Championships obtaining 14th place. He ended the season in style by clinching 5th place in the Tour of Lombardy. It seems logical that he is starting the 2010 season with high expectations.
